Start with the main concepts in your research question or topic. Then make a list of synonyms or related terms, using the following possible strategies:
- Brainstorm
- Search Google (i.e., “synonyms for older adults”)
- Ask your favorite generative AI (i.e., “I am a nursing student conducting research on pressure ulcers in older adults living in nursing homes. Generate a list of synonyms for each concept in my search.”)
NOTE: Generative AI models often suggest more synonyms than is useful. Select the most relevant terms carefully.
Expect to change your search terms as you look at results. Pay attention to the terminology used by the most relevant results. Also, look at the subject terms to identify other good search term candidates. A good search is constructed iteratively!
