Generally, tutorials and consultations last between 20-30 minutes—although the length is flexible according to needs and availability.

In a typical writing tutorial, writers and tutors will set an agenda for the session, read through some or all of the text, discuss the writing and relevant writing principles, and apply new information or ideas as part of the writing or revision process. Writers should come to the tutoring session ready to actively participate in talking, writing, thinking, and revising their work.

A research consultation will follow a similar format, but students will discuss and implement research principles instead of writing principles. Students should come ready to “learn by doing” proper research techniques.
