The room houses an impressive collection of texts from Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece, the Ancient Roman World and the Holy Land. There are eighteen different languages represented including Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Egyptian and Arabic.
The collection began largely through the efforts of Hugh Nibley. BYU also received nearly four-hundred books on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Qumran Community from Dr. Fredrick Young.
The room is kept locked to protect the rare items inside.
Students or professors wishing to do scholarly research in the Ancient Studies Room should contact the Humanities Help Desk on Level 5 or Mary Chapman the Humanities Reference Specialist.
